By products and specified risk material Flashcards
ABP( animal by product )
not intended for human consumption
State and briefly describe the categories 1 of by products
category 1
= high risk to human/animal health
*include specified risk material
- reject : SRM, entire bodies or parts containing SRM , all if TSE suspected or confirmed , animal material (sludge ) ruminants, wild animals with zoonotic disease , drugs ( aren’t permitted under EC legislation )
State and briefly describe the categories 2 of by products
category 2
=unfit for human or animal consumption
-discard =
sludge non-ruminants
drugs that are authorised but above permitted levels
material imported that doesn’t comply
carcase ( without SRM )
animals /parts die not due to slaughter
animals products unfit due to foreign bodies manure
digestive tract contents
blood any animal not passed antemortem
most post mortem rejections due to pathology
State and briefly describe the categories 3 of by products
category 3
=fit not intended for human consumption
-if passed ante-mortem - poultry head, feathers , pig bristles , feet, hides , skin, horns , blood pigs and poultry , ( blood ruminants only if passed PM or PM rejection not posing risk )
-can used for raw pet food only
How are category 1 disposed of ?
-incinerator/pressure sterilisation
-permanent marking
-landfill or fuel combustion at approved combustion plant
How is the disposal of category 2 and 3 different from category 1 ?
go through same process as category 1 BUT ..
cat 2 - after processed use as fertilizer , cosmetics , medical devices (*can used manure without processing )
cat 3 - ped food plant , pharmaceutical plant
Name some exemptions from the categories
-all can be used for diagnostic , educational, research purposes
-used for feeding endangered species
What are the requirements for ABP in abbatoir
-identification - labelled
-storage - avoid contamination , leak prof , lids
-staining - cat 1 with SRM= blue , cat 2 and other cat 1 = black
-collection and transport - record , be going to approved premise
Who enforces ABP ?
-in abattoir = FSA - FBO ( OV responsible for supervision and enforcement where necessary )
-outside abattoir = trading standards , APHA ( OV must report if breach in transport or destination )
SRM
specified risk material
=part of cattle, sheep, goats that pose a risk if animal had TSE
therefore need to be removed from human and animal consumption and destroyed
What parts of cattle of all ages is SRM ?
tonsils
last 4 m of SI
caecum
mesentery
What does red stripe on label mean ( cattle ) ?
over 30 months so have had vertebral column removed
SRM of a sheep/goat under 12 months .
none
TRUE/FALSE monitoring for TSE ( BSE, scrapie )is done in ruminants for and not for human consumption
true
are scrapie and BSE notifiable ?
yes
How take scrapie sample
-FBO removes head
-OV or trained MHI - removes brain stem and cerebellum
-sent to TSE testing lab
What animals do we test for scrapie ?
-suspected
-over 18m DOA or DIL
-random sample of human consumption animals
What animals do we now test for BSE ?
at risk cattle
-all emergency slaughter
-die or killed ( fallen stock ) other than human consumption over 48 months
-sick ante-mortem , signs bad welfare over 48 m
-animals born before 1st august 1996
-NO sampling of healthy animals
TRUE/FALSE when awaiting BSE results must be kept in secure place and no one can go in without OV
true
TRUE/FALSE if test BSE negative rest of carcass not containing the SRM can return to food chain
true
