Business Strategy Flashcards
Professional responsibilities may include what seven (7) items?
- Carry professional liability insurance
- Become certified in both the theoretical and practical components of fitness
- Become certified in CPR and AED
- Perform pre-exercise screening. Have participants fill out a Par-Q form
- Get medical clearance for moderate and high risk participants
- Check for environmental hazards
- Implement emergency response plan
Medical clearance recommendations for high risk participants (define risk level and list requirements).
(one or more cardiovascular and pulmonary disease signs/symptoms; or diagnosed with cardiovascular, pulmonary, or metabolic disease):
Medical exam, clearance, and exercise testing prior to participating in moderate to vigorous exercise.
Medical clearance recommendations for moderate risk participants (define risk level and list requirements).
(men over 45; women over 55; those who meet the threshold for two or more risk factors):
Medical exam and clearance before participating in vigorous exercise.
Medical clearance recommendations for low-risk participants (define risk level and list requirements).
Do not require a medical clearance before participating in moderate to vigorous exercise
List 10 exercise danger signs (participants should STOP exercise and the
instructor should assess the need for emergency response procedures).
Nausea and/or vomiting Dizziness, light headed-ness or unusual fatigue Chest pain or tightness Loss of muscle-control and staggering Severe breathlessness Allergic reactions Blurred vision Acute illness Mental confusion Cyanosis (blue skin color) - results from poor circulation or inadequate oxygenation of the blood Acute musculoskeletal injury
List five (5) signs or participant complaints that would require exercise modification or cessation of exercise (not emergency response) until the signs disappear.
a. Labored breathing
b. Excessive heart rate elevation
c. Evidence of strain, holding breath or unusual redness
d. musculoskeletal pain
e. lack of proper body control
What should an instructor know about the effects of drugs and/or medications
on exercise response?
Instructors need to be aware that certain prescriptions, as well as non-prescription medications (antihistamines, antibiotics) may elicit side effects similar to those listed under “Exercise Danger Signs”.
- List four (4) AFAA recommendations to avoid overtraining.
Vary the classes you teach or take Vary muscle conditioning exercises (pay attention to common muscle imbalances) Keep class format well-balanced (proper warm-up and cool-down period) Limit high-impact activities and very advanced exercises or classes
In terms of hydration and rehydration, AFAA recommends:
- Consuming 8 to 10 ounces of water 10-20 minutes prior to a light workout
- Consume 3 to 4 ounces for every 20 minutes of exercise
- Consume about 16 ounces for every single pound of weight lost as a result of exercise
- Consume cold water in exercise sessions less than 90 minutes in duration
Describe the appropriate exercise attire that AFAA recommends.
- Comfortable clothing that breathe and allow for the evaporation of sweat
- Neat, professional and appropriate for type of class
- Choose footwear appropriate for type of class and which provides proper support, design and cushioning.
According to AFAA, a group exercise instructor should generally teach at what class level?
Teach at the intermediate level and then offer lower lever modifications for those who need it.
Discuss at least four (4) ways to ensure a successful substitute teaching experience.
a. Properly evaluate the teaching situation in order to determine the needs of the class
b. Be aware of gym policy
c. Develop self-confidence
d. Make the right connection with the participants
