What are the regulations in regard to practicing PT without a license?
It is unlawful for any person or persons to practice/offer PT in this state for compensation received or expected, or to hold himself/herself out as a physical therapist, unless at the time of doing so the person holds a valid, unexpired, and unrevoked license issues under this chapter.
How many aides are allowed to practice under a physical therapist?
A PT licensed pursuant to this chapter may utilize the services of 1 aide engaged in patient related tasks.
What is the definition of a patient related task?
A patient related task means a physical therapy service rendered directly to the patient by the aide, excluding non-patient related tasks. Non-patient related tasks means a task related to observation of the patient, transport of the client, physical support only during gait or transfer training, housekeeping duties, clerical duties, and similar functions. The aide shall at all times be under the orders, direction, and immediate supervision of the physical therapist. Nothing in this section shall authorize an aide to independently perform OT or any PT procedure.
Where must the PT be in relation to the aide?
The PT shall provide continuous and immediate supervision of the aide. The PT shall be in the same facility as, and in proximity to, the location where the aide is performing patient-related tasks, and shall be readily available at all times to provide advice or instruction.
When patient related tasks are being performed by an aide, does a PT have to do treatment that day?
When patient related tasks are provided to a patient by an aide, the supervising PT shall, at some point during the treatment day, provide direct service to the patient as treatment for the patient’s condition, or to further evaluate and monitor the patient’s progress, and shall correspondingly document the patient’s record. The administration of massage, external baths, or normal exercise not a part of a physical therapy treatment shall not be prohibited by this section.
Who can use the title Physical Therapist?
How are we allowed to document our degree if we have received a DPT? Are we allowed to use the term doctor, and if so what else must we specify?
A person holding the license as a physical therapist issued by the board may use the title “physical therapist” or the letters P.T. or any other words, letters, or figures that indicate that the person using same is a licensed physical therapist. No other person shall be so designated or shall use the term licensed or registered physical therapist, licensed/registered physiotherapist/technician, or the letters LPT, RPT, or PT/
- A licensed PT who has received a doctoral degree (DPT), or after adoption of the regulations described in subdivision, a doctoral degree in related health science may do the following:
1) In a written communication, use the initial DPT, PhD, or EdD, as applicable following the PT’s name.
2) In a written communication, use the title Doctor or the abbreviation Dr. preceding the licensee’s name, if the licensee’s name is immediately followed by an abbreviated specification of the applicable doctoral degree held by the licensee.
3) In a spoken communication while engaged in the practice of physical therapy, use the title doctor preceding the person’s name, if the speaker specifies that he or she is a physical therapist.
How many times can you qualify to be a PTLA?
Once. If you do are applicant and do not qualify and receive a license as provided by the section, all privledges under this section shall terminate upon noticed by mail, return receipt requested.
What can you do if you do not pass the NPTE?
Any applicant for licensure who fails to pass the exam may take another exam and shall pay the re-examination fee.
If you have filed to take the licensure exam, what are you able to perform as and for how long?
Every graduate of an approved PT education who has filed a complete application for licensure with the board for the first time may, following receipt of a letter of authorization to take the licensing examination and perform as a PTLA, perform as a PT under the direct and immediate supervision of a PT licensed in this state, for 90 days pending the results of the first licensing examination. During this period, the applicant shall identify themselves only as a PTLA. If the applicant passes the exam, the PTLA status shall remain in effect until a regular renewable license is issued or denied by the board. Note that a person shall not be considered a graduate unless he or she has successfully completed all the clinical training and internships required for graduation from the program.
If the applicant fails to take the exam within 90 days or fails the exam, all privleges here terminate.
