Describe the scope of practice of physical therapy, including what we are allowed to use and not allowed to use.
Physical therapy means the art and science of physical or corrective rehab or of physical or corrective treatment of any bodily or mental condition of any person by the use of the physical, chemical, and other properties of heat, light, water, electricity, sound, massage, and active, passive, or resistive exercise, and shall include physical therapy evaluation, treatment planning, instruction, and consultative services. The practice of PT includes the promotion and maintenance of physical fitness to enhance the bodily movement related health and wellness of individuals through PT interventions. The use of roentgen (x-rays) and radioactive materials, for diagnostic/therapeutic purposes, and the use of electricity for surgical purposes, including cauterization, are not authorized. And a license issues pursuant to this chapter does not authorize diagnosis of disease. Nothing in this section shall be construed to restrict or prohibit other healing arts practitioners or registered under this division to restrict or prohibit other healing arts practitioners under this division within the scope of their license or registration.
*What are the regulations in regards to topical medications in PT practice? How does this impact our ability to presrcibe medications?
A PT licensed pursuant may apply topical medications as part of the practice of PT if she/he complies with regulations duly adopted by the board pursuant to this section and the Administrative Procedure Act. The board shall adopt regulations implementing this section after meeting and conferring with the Medical Board of California and the California State Board of Pharmacy specifying those medications applicable to the practice of PT and protocols for their use. Nothing in this section shall be contrued to authorize a PT to prescribe medications.
*What are the regulations in regards to tissue penetration in PT?
A PT may, upon specified authorization of a physician and surgeon, perform tissue penetation of evaluating neuromuscular performance as a part of the PT practice, provided the PT is certified by the board to perform the tissue penetration and evaluation and provided the PT does not develop or make diagnostic or prognostic interpretations of the data obtained. Any PT who does so is in violation of the Medical Practice Act and may be subject to all of the sanctions and penalties set forth in that act. The board after meeting with the Division of Licensing of the Medical Board of CA shall do all of the following:
a) Adopt standards/procedures for tissue penetration for the purpose of evaluating a neuromuscular performance by certified PT’s
b) Establish standards for PTs to perform tissue penetration for the purpose of evaluating neuromuscular performance
c) Certify PTs meeting standards estalished by the board pursuant in this section.

a) A PT shall document his or her evaluation, goals, treatment plans, and summary of treatment in the patient record.
B) A PT shall document the care actually provided to the patient in the patient record.
c) A T shall sign the patient record legibly.
d) Patient records shall be maintained for a period of no less than 7 years following discharge of the patient, except that the records of unemancipated minors shall be maintained at least one year after the minor has reached 18 years of age, and not in any case less than 7 years.
Are you allowed to practice medicine, surgery, or any other form of healing not authorized by section 2620?
No. Nothing in this chapter shall be construed as authorizing a PT to practice medicine, surgery, or any other form of healing except as authorized by section 2620.
What is the meaning of physical therapist and physical therapist technician, and how are PT and physiotherapists related?
PT and PT technician mean a person who is licensed pursuant to this chapter to practice PT. For purposes of this chapter, the term PT and physiotherapy shall be deemed identical and interchangeable.
