Q

How do you cause positive Buoyancy?

A

To cause positive buoyancy, an object must weigh less than the amount of water it displaces, so the water being dense, or the object being not-so-dense would help

Q

How does a dense substance like Metal float on a less dense substance like Water?

A

For the metal to be able to float, it has to displace more liquid than the amount that the metal thing weighs, if it’s a just a small, dense block of metal it won’t float, but if it’s a big hollow box, it will float

Q

How can you use the particle theory to explain density?

A

All matter is made up of particles, and all particles have empty spaces between them. Some matter has more particles than others, and some particles have smaller spaces between them. Those matter(s) with more particles and smaller spaces between particles are dense

Q

What is a Swim Bladder? What is a Ballast Tank?

A

Swim Bladder - A controllable balloon-like chamber that allows fish to alter their buoyancy. They fill it up with air when they want to increase their density for a negative effect on buoyancy, and they pump the air out when they want a positive effect on buoyancy

Ballast Tank - Basically a swim bladder but it’s in a submarine, and it can also add water when they need to for an even more negative effect on buoyancy
