Bulemia Nervosa is characterized by
episodes of binge eating followed by feelings of guilt, humiliation, depression, and self-condemnation; followed by inappropriate compensatory behavior to rid calories
Bulemia Nervosa should NOT be confused for
hunger; it’s to control anxiety and emotions and get rid of guilt
Diagnostic Criteria for Bulemia Nervosa
Recurrent episodes of binge eating; recurrent inappropriate compensatory behaviors in order to prevent weight gain; self-evaluation that is unduly influenced by body shape and weight
Bulemia Nervosa Risk Factors
genetic first degree relatives, biologcial chromosome 10p and altered serotonin levels, behavioral, environmental, family, psychosocial, childhood obesity, early pubertal maturation, genetic vulnerability, White F, overanxious d/o of childhood
Bulemia Nervosa Clinical Manifestation
appear thin, normal, or slightly overweight; persistent sore throat, heartburn, tooth staining, loss of dental enamel, and caries/cavities; callus and scarring on back of the hands and knuckles; F/E imbalance
Bulemia Nervosa PC
gastric rupture during binge; parotitis and gum infx (puffy cheeks); dehydration; chronic irregular BM; mood and anxiety d/o; substance abuse; rectal prolapse
Bulemia Nervosa diagnostic test
evaluate upper GI; psychologcial evaluation; lab tests; baseline EKG
Bulemia Nervosa treatment
cognitive behavior tx; centering on issues that cause the behavior; work on their extreme perfectionism and weight control behavior; anti-depressants/anti-anxiety; Self-help groups when they are ready later

more common in 20 yo F; recurrent binging then purging; persistent over concern with body shape; appears normal size
