Afterload Flashcards
Afterload is
the amount of resistance that the ventricle have to overcome to eject the volume/load of blood in the ventricles; the forces opposing ventricular ejection; (e.g against aortic pressure = left side afterload); the greater the radius of ventricle = the greater the volume or systemic vascular resistance = the greater the afterload
After load Right Side
think Pulmonary Vascular Resistance or pulmonary arterial pressure
Afterload Left Side
think Systemic vascular resistance or systemic arterial pressure; the greater the SVR = the greater the BP
Afterload and Poiseuille’s Law
the greater the diameter and length = the LESS the resistance; INVERSE RELATIONSHIP
Afterload variables
arterial tone, valve competency; autonomic/sympathetic stimulation of catecholamine; hormones; dz conditions anaphylaxis or sepsis; medication
