Building the skilled inner voice Flashcards
emotions in clinical practice
emotions shown to impact on patent safety
clinicians are required to actively manage their own and others emotions
emotions influence practice
what is emotional labour comprised of
empathy with patients
suppressing own thinking/feeling
executive thinking
creating our mind
the more open we are to our significant feelings the more likely we are to be rational
super-conscious
learn clinical skills and help others much more effectively by harnessing psychological felxbiltiy
3 conversations in any helping relationship
public conversation
patient/peer conversation
self-talk
self talk
verbal thinking
some is preconscious or automatic
some is helpful and some isn’t
if we create negative self-statements we weaken ourselves internally through unskillful thinking
instantaneous sequence of hormonal changes and physiological responses to ready body for action
the hypothalamus activates the sympathetic nervous system by sending signals through autonomic nervous system to adrenal glands to produce adrenaline
then if HPA axis is activated to keep body on high alert through release of cortisol
threat passes and cortisol drops parasympathetic nervous system is activated
what is the amygdala
area of the brain that contributes to emotional processing
function of the amygdala
receives sensory infromation
decides if event is emotionally relevant or not
instantly sends distress signal to hypothalamus
blocks messages to and from the prefrontal cortex to maximise efficiency
function of the hippocampus
coordinates memory
retrieves salient memories to reinforce the stress response
stress: the body, mind and emotional process
amygdala hijacks the brain by cutting off prefrontal thinking to prepare for emergency action
creates panic
emotional alarm triggers an automatic behavioural response of fight, flight, freeze and appease
self-compassion as self-acceptance
- tendency to treat oneself kindly in the face of perceived inadequacy by engaging in self-soothing and positive self-talk
- recognising discomfort is an unavoidable part of human experience, promotes sense connection to others in the face of feelings of isolation and disappointment
- individuals able to face own painful thoughts without avoiding or exaggerating them, managing disappointment and frustration by quelling self-pity and melodrama
self compassion vs high self esteem
not dependent on evidence of superior achievements
self esteem is situational dependent and can be variable dependent on sense of achieving or succeeding
self compassion is constant quality that is independent to how well we’re doing
bypasses self critic
useful questions for reflecting on our skilled inner voice
how does it make me feel
how much do I know it makes those were interacting with feel
