Building A PC Flashcards
An average person wants to build their own PC. What products would you suggest?
Suggest middle of the road products that meet the minimum requirements with what they’re trying to do.
Average motherboard, SSD, and Microsoft Windows package and hardware to pair it with.
Thin client
You’d have the basic applications, essentials, and network connectivity to do work on.
A thin client rarely uses its own internal storage to do anything.
Graphic/CAD/CAM/Design Workstation
You need a big, powerful, multicore processor; big motherboard; max out the RAM; high-end video cards.
With a virtualization workstation, what do you need?
You need a powerful system with lots of CPU cores and lots of RAM (lots of space and storage) because you’re running lots of virtual machines (VMs) simultaneously.
For a NAS (headless) Workstation, what do you need to build it?
The NAS system sits on your computer and it doesn’t have anything with it - no keyboard, mouse, etc. It does one thing really well - to share files (word docs or audio).
You need a high speed network card (gigabit is minimum), minimum of 4 hard drives, and RAID array to protect your data when sharing files. You need ethernet to help the network connect with all the file sharing.
Data reliability and protection is the most important aspect of a NAS.
You need a midrange CPU and midrange motherboard.
For a gaming PC, what hardware do you need to build it?
- a multicore processor
- a powerful motheboard
- high end power supply
- high end video cards
- high def sound system
- very large SSD (solid state drives) and rotational media for storing games
For Video and Editing workstations, what do you need to build it?
- specialized audio and video cards
- large, fast hard drives
- dual monitors
MACs are recommended for video and editing, especially.
