Buddhism 2.1 Festivals and Celebrations Flashcards
Why do Buddhists have festivals
They use them as times for reaffirming devotion and commitment, generating punya for the individual and the community
Why might one argue against the importance of festivals
Celebrating the same events at the same point in the year can create an illusion of permanence. This means the festivals violate the notion of anitya
Another reason one might argue against the importance of festivals
The Buddha would regard it as putting too much importance on the events of his life. “be islands unto yourselves” - Mahaparinibbana Sutra. The Buddha is unnecessary as a refuge and we should focus on the Dharma alone
What is Wesak
Wesak is celebrated on the 4th lunar month of each year and refers to the important events in the life of the Buddha that took place in that month
Why is Wesak important
It is important because in this month the Buddha was born, was enlightened and passed into parinirvana. It reminds Buddhists of the importance of his life and what he did whilst also trying to learn from what he did
3 things that are done on Wesak
1) Houses are decorated with lights and flowers
2) Wesak cards are exchanged (like Christmas cards) which depict the life of the Buddha
3) Dana is encouraged so lay community often give large meals to the monastics in recognition of their duty
What is Nirvana Day
A Mahayana festival that marks the death of the Buddha. It is a more solemn occasion than Wesak
Why is Nirvana Day important
Because it gives people time to reflect on the future of their life, and of friends and family that have recently passed away. It reminds everyone that loss and impermanence are things to be accepted rather than cause grief.
3 Things that are done on Nirvana Day
1) People celebrate with meditation or going to Buddhist temples or monastries
2) The Mahaparinibanna Sutra is read out because it describes the Buddhas last few days
3) Food is prepared and some bring presents
