4.1 Human rights Flashcards
Reasons religious people support human rights
1) Christians subscribe to “imago dei”, endowed with intrinsic value and dignity. Human rights honour and enforce that …
2) Jesus told “love thine neighbour like yourself” referring to agapic love so supporting HR you ensure everyone receives that agape love.
Reasons non-religious people should support human rights
1) Utilitarianism, Jeremy Bentham, maximise happiness and so human rights do this…
Religious view on why Christians believe in right to liberty
It aligns with the words of God “You were chose to be free” - Galatians 5:13
Reply to Christians believing in the right to liberty
Contradicts some of the central parts of Christianity. Christians aren’t fully free, Decalogue says you can’t murder so means the right to liberty isn’t valid in Christianity
Religious view on why Christians believe in right to equality
“imago dei” made the same so God’s intention to keep us the same. Should follow this and remain equal to the best of our abilities.
Reply to view on why Christians believe in the right to equality
In Christianity the people aren’t treated the same. Catholic Church refuse to marry homosexuals and therefore treat some Christians differently, not equal. Different to the right.
Non religious view on why we should follow the right to liberty
Harm Principle, JS Mill says we should be able to do whatever we want as long as it does not physically harm anyone else. This improves society well being.
Non-religious view on why we should follow the right to equality
