Briefly describe the pathophysiology of bronchiectasis
Chronic infection of bronchi/bronchioles → permanent
dilatation.
Retained inflammatory secretions and microbes →
airway damage and recurrent infection
Three causes of bronchiectasis
- IDIOPATHIC (50%)
- CF
- Post-infectious: TB, pneumonia, measles
- Immunodeficiency
- Bronchial obstruction e.g. tumour
Two symptoms of bronchiectasis?
persistent cough
haemoptysis
fever
weight loss
Two signs of bronchiectasis?
clubbing
coarse inspiratory creps
wheeze
purulent sputum
Three complications of bronchiectasis?
pneumonia pleural efffusion pneumothorax pulmonary HTN massive haemoptysis- anaemia
