Broadmann areas and the homunculi Flashcards
Primary somatosensory area
post-central gyrus. signals from the thalamus. main receptive field for sense of touch. broadman areas 3,2,1.
somatosensory association area
posterior to the primary somatosensory area. integrates sensory information from the primary somato area. allows to construct an understanding of the object being felt.
Primary motor area
boradmann area 4. pre-central gyrus. Inverted fashion so toe is at the top of the hemisphere and mouth is at the bottom. involved in the planning and excecution of movements.
Pre-motor area
anterior to the primary motor area. Broadmann area 6. this projects directly to the spinal cord.
orbitofrontal areas
the prefrontal cortex region in the frontal lobes in the brain which is involved in decision making. Broadmann area 10, 11 and 47.
Primary, secondary and associative visual areas.
17, 18, 19. involved in the processing of visual information.
Primary and associative auditory areas.
41, 42 and partially 22. processes auditory information.
Broca’s area
Region of frontal lobe in the dominant hemisphere. it is involvedin speech production and language processing.areas 44 and 45.
Wernicke’s area
involved in comprehension or understanding of written and spoken language. in superior temporal gyrus. is area 22.
anterior and posterior cingulated gyri
above the corpus callosum - the limbic system.
insular cortex
portion of the cerebral cortex folded deep within the lateral sulcus, involved in consciousness, emotion and homostasis.
