1918 - representation of the people Act
= Granted women over 30, who owned property or had a property owning husband, the right to vote
1928 - The Equal Franchise Act
= Women were granted the vote on the same terms as men for the first time.
Paragraph 1 - Women’s War Work
During the 1st World War Women Worked in Key Industries like the munitions factories, which made bullets for soldiers. Women also picked up the jobs normally done by men, for e.g. tram conductors, labourers and Working in hospitals. However, Only women over the age of 30 who had property or had a property owning husband got the vote even though it was the young, working class women that died in the munitions factories and did the bulk of the work.
Paragraph 1 - Women’s War Work - ANALYSIS
A - Proved that they could be just as capable as men in many sectors and industries proving they could be trusted participants in the political arena
A + - The women that gave up the most did not get the vote, it wasn’t a reward
E- By 1909 the Suffragettes had branches all over the country, suggesting that many people held the same views as them and with how popular the suffragettes became it was not a matter of if it was a matter of when women got the vote.
Paragraph 2 - The suffragettes
The suffragettes were formed in 1903 by Emmeline Pankhurst, a former suffragist.
The Radical, Militant tactics of the suffragettes meant that they stayed high on the political agenda and as a result so did women’s suffrage.
However, the Suffragettes motto ‘ Deeds not words’ led many to dislike the actions of the suffragettes.
Paragraph 2 - The Suffragettes (AA+E)
A - Actions were not easily ignored, they couldn’t be pushed aside as easily as the suffragists could
A + - Actions played into the government’s narrative that women were unruly and unworthy of the vote
E - Suffragists founded in 1897 & the suffragettes were founded in 1903. the mere existence of the suffragettes proved the failure of the suffragists, their methods were just too slow.
Paragraph 3 - The Suffragists
The suffragists were seen as polite, intelligent and law-abiding, it was thought that through these tactics women proved themselves responsible enough to gain the vote.
The suffragists also won over many MP’s due to the number of Bills brought forth to parliament.
However , Up to 1900 15 bills for women’s suffrage were brought forth to parliament and all 15 of them failed.
