Breast Imaging Flashcards
Reasons for imaging in breast cancer?
Screening
Diagnosis
Monitoring response
Treatmnet of non malignant lumps?
Vacuum assisted excision (VAE)
Strengths of mammography?
Whole of both breasts image
High sensitivty for DCIS
Accesible and inexpensive
Reproducible
Weakness of mammography?
Ionising radiation
Breast pain/discomfort
Challenging if limited mobility
Low sensitivity for dense breasts
Indications for mamography?
50-70 years old for screening or >40 for high risk
Symptomatic assessment >40 years
Follow ups after cancer treatment
Advanced mammographic techniques?
3D one (Tomosynthesis)
Contrast enhanced spectral mammography (CESM)
Grey scale US
When would tomography be indicated
Dense breasts
Why is CESM good/bad?
Good: greater sensitivity for dense breastys
Bad: Increased radiation dose, IV contrast agent, breast pain
Indications for grey scale US?
-Pregnancy
Clinical abormaility
