Aetiology of acute mastitis?
A
Duct ectasia mixed organisms or anaerobes
Lactation: staph A, strep pyogenes

Management of acute mastitis/abscess?
A
ABs
Percutaneous drainage
Incision and drainage
Treat underlying cause

Presnettaion>
A
Fever Erythema Induration Tenderness Swelling Unilateral, painful inflamed breast

Initial advice/plan for management of mastitis?
A
- Examine every 3 days to be certain no abscess formation
- Continue breast feeding if doing that

1st line treatment for mastitis?
A
Ensure compete breast emptying by feeding +/- expressing
Warm compresses and NSAIDs
May require ABs
If no response may = breast abscess

Which ABs in mastitis?
A
Flucloxacillin if no improvement or sepsis signs present
-Clindamycin if penicillin allergic

Management if breast abscess suspected?
A
Breast team referral for USS +/- drainage
