Major risk factors for breast cancer?
Genetics, fam history, hormone therapy, menstrual history, exposure to certain pesticides
How are most breast cancers detected?
Self examination and mammorgrams
Besides lump in breast what are some other manifestations of breast cancer?
Abnormal nipple discharge, rash around nipple, nipple retraction, dimpling of skin, change in position of nipple, nipple pain, scaliness/orange peel look of nipple, ulceration, skin irritation or discharge
Lumpectomy is what?
Removal of tumor and surrounding tissue
Simple mastectomy is what?
Removal of complete breast
Radical mastectomy is what?
Removal of entire breast, underlying chest muscles and affected lymph nodes
Modified radical mastectomy is what?
Conserves underlying chest muscles
What can be caused from removal of lymph nodes that causes arm to accumulate fluid bc of impaired lymphatic drainage causing severe swelling?
Lymphedema
Treatment for lymphedema?
Light exercises, manage pain, compression garments, bandage wraps, massage, avoid BP/IV’s on affected arm and educate on infection prevention/recognition
Treatment for body image changes?
Assess self-image, educate on healing of scar, include partner, breast reconstruction options, support groups
Treatment for sexuality?
Include partner, referral support, and allow for an open discussion
