Brainstem Flashcards
Stalk like part of the
brain ; located in the
posterior cranial fossa
Brainstem
The brain stem consists of:
Midbrain
Pons
Medulla oblongata
T or F:
The midbrain is the shortest part of the brainstem
TRUE
Contains the nuclei of (CN?)
Oculomotor and Trochlear nerves
The midbrain’s centers are associated with
auditory, visual and pupillary reflexes
PonsForms the floorof therostralpart of the 4thventricle
Pons
Contains nuclei related to (CN?)
Trigeminal, Abducent,Facialand Vestibulocochlearnerves
The pons’ centers are associated with
mastication, eye movements, facial expression, blinking, salivation, equilibrium and audition
Forms the caudal floorof the 4th ventricle
Medulla oblongata
Contains nuclei related to (CN?)
Glossopharyngeal, Vagus, Accessoryand Hypoglossal nerves
Medulla oblongata’s centers are associated with
deglutition, coughing, vomiting, salivation, tongue movements, respiration and circulation
2 parts of the the floor of the 4th ventricle
Pontine and medullary
MEDULLA OBLONGATA
On either side of the posterior median sulcus is the
Gracile tubercle
MEDULLA OBLONGATA
Lateral to each gracile tubercle is the
Cuneate tubercle
It receives input from all parts of nervous system and in turn, exerts widespread influence on CNS function
Reticular formation
