Brain Flashcards
Neuroplasticity
the brains ability to change its structure and function of its cells. younger = more plastic
Prefrontal Lobotomy
Disconnects prefrontal cortex from rest of the brain to control behavior.
Split Brain
When hemispheres cannot communicate with each other. Damaged corpus callosum.
Hemispherectomy
Removal of one hemisphere of the brain.
Deep Brain Stimulation
Inserting electrons in the brain to stimulate areas of the brain
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)
Use of a magnetic wand that alters how the brain processes
Brain Scanning
Scans that provide information about the structure or activity of the brain
Electroencephalograph (EEG)
Machine used to record brain wave patterns produced by electrical activity on the surface of the brain
Computer Tomography CT/CAT scan
2D x-ray. Can see muscle or bone disorder, blood clots, and can examine bones or soft tissue.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging MRI
Uses radio waves and magnetic fields to produce 3D images of the brain in detail
Functional MRI/fMRI
Visualizes blood flow and oxygen metabolism to infer brain activity.
Positron Emission Tomography, PET scan
Radioactive Sugar injection that shows where the glucose goes in the brain.
