Brachial Plexus Flashcards
What nerves belong to the brachial plexus
- Nervus suprascapularis
- Nervus subscapularis
- Nervus musculocutaneus
- Nervi pectorales craniales
- Nervi pectorales caudales
- Nervus thoracicus longus
- Nervus thoracodorsalis
- Nervus thoracicus lateralis
- Nervus axillaris
- Nervus radialis
- Nervus medianus
- Nervus ulnaris
Where does brachial plexus course, which branches of spinal nerves is it formed by.
On medial surface of scapula, cranially from first rib between long muscle of neck and scaleni muscles.
Formed by ventral branches of cervical spinal nerves 6-8 + thoracic nerves 1-2
Nervus suprascapularis
> Motor
Runs caudolaterally
Supplies M. Supraspinatus & M. Infraspinatus
Formed by ventral branches of C6 and C8
Nervus subscapularis
> Motor
From cranial part of plexus C6 - C8
Supplies M. Subscapularis
Nervus musculocutaneus
> Runs parallel to N. Medianus
From C6-C8
Supplies M. Coracobrachialis, M. Biceps brachii & M. Brachialis
Forms Ansa axillaris in (Un) together with N. medianus (according to könig)
Goes to middle of humerus, and proceeds onto cranial surface of the limb
Branch:
~N. Cutaneus antebrachii medialis
>Innervates craniomedial skin, from carpal joint
to pastern joint as well as dorsal surface of skin
Nervi pectorales craniales
> Motor
Supplies M. Pectoralis superficialis & M. Subclavius (un)
Passes with a. Circumflexa humeri cranialis
From C7-C8
Nervi pectorales caudales
> Motor
Supplies M. Pectoralis profundus & M. Cutaneus trunci
Runs caudoventrally
From C8 to T1 (T2)
Nervus Thoracicus longus
> Motor
Supplies M. Serratus ventralis thoracis
Runs horizontally
From C7-C8
Nervus thoracodorsalis
> Motor
Supplies M. Latissimus dorsi
Runs caudally
From C8
Nervus Thoracicus lateralis
> Motor and sensory
Supplies lateral aspect of thoracic and abdominal region (cutaneus muscle) + skin
From C8 & T1
Some fibres join with adjacent intercostal nerves
Nervus axillaris
> Motor and sensory
Starts above shoulder joint, passes caudolaterally
Supplies m. Teres major et minor, subscapularis and m. Deltoideus
divides under m. Deltoideus into
-N. Cutaneus brachii lateralis
cranialis
- N. Cutaneus antebrachii cranialis
>Innervates lateral surface of shoulder joint,
almost entire elbow joint area as well as skin
above the extensor carpi radialis muscle
Nervus radialis
> Motor and sensory
Passes with brachial deep artery along the medial
surface of limb. Towards cranial surface of elbow
joint
supplies m. Triceps brachii, M. Anconeus. M. Tensor fascia antebrachii & extensors of forearm
Divides into
Rami musculares:
-Triceps brachii, tensor fasciae latae, extensors of
front limb
N. Cutaneus antebrachii lateralis:
-Goes towards extensor muscles
Nervi digitales dorsales:
-Dorsal parts of digits
Nervus medianus
> Motor and sensory
Passes with brachial and median artery
Supplies deep & superficial digital flexors, M. Pronator teres & part of skin on palmar aspect
From C8-T1
In (fe) goes through foramen supracondylare with brachial artery
at carpal joint divides into Nn. Divitales palmares communes 1-3
Sensory fibres innervate the entire surface of
front limb
Nervus Ulnaris
> Motor and sensory
Runs caudal to median nerve with a. Collateral ulnaris
Supplies flexor muscles & part of skin of forearm, and lateral side of manus
Branches:
- Ramus dorsalis
- Ramus palmaris
- N. Cutenus antebrachii caudalis
Location + supply Of brachial plexus
> Formed by ventral branches of C6-C8 +T1/T2
Supplies all structures of forelimb, part of lateral wall of abdomen and thorax
