Boys Under Achievement Flashcards
What does Carol Jackson argue about? Laddish behaviour?
Jackson examined Laddish behaviour among the 13th 14-year-old boys and girls she interviewed 203 students and eight schools and a questionnaire data from 800 students in six schools behaviour is based on the idea that it is uncool to work and that appearing call is necessary to be popular. Students are faced with a dilemma that they want to do well academically yet they also want to appear cool and popular but if they are seeing to work hard, they are a geek. The solution is to appear to reject schoolwork do the required amount of messing around but work secretly usually at home, middle-class advantage as they have resources at home to do their homework.
Changes in the labour market and decline of traditional male jobs
The UK has experienced a huge decline in manufacturing and industry since the 1980s partly due to increase to globalisation. This is led to fewer skilled and unskilled jobs which typically would be occupied by working class ban. New jobs with the UK sector have emerged, but there are typically seen as part of the female gender domain care work. This may impact the attainment of working class boys as they no longer have a clear sense of direction for the future. Some sociologist have argued that this is led to a crisis of masculinity whereby working class boys are failed to adapt their behaviour in school changing economic circumstances which means that they are increasingly limited job prospects and unemployment
What is moral panic?
The term can be applied to any sensationalist or over the top reaction to an issue that appears to relate to morality to right and wrong some socialist therefore argue that the concern about boys so-called under achievement constitutes some moral panic.
What does wiener say about the media ?
Media exaggerate the underachievement of boys as a backlash against feminine success
What has Tony Sewell argued about male underachievement?
Argues that boys fall behind because education has become feminised schools don’t nurture masculine traits such as competitiveness and leadership instead they celebrate qualities more closely associated with girls such as methodological working and attentiveness in class Civil thinks that should be more of a focus on exams and outdoor adventure in curriculum.
The boiz study
Conducted the study from 2008-2010 called from labouring to learning since working class masculinity is education and industrialisation. The boys lived in a former coal mining community and often displayed Anti school attitudes they walked with macho swagger and they bullied geeks. they texted and listened to music in class and replaced uniforms with colourful tracksuits. The behaviour reflected the working class culture unlike the lads they had a few if any working class jobs to go to. the coal minds had been shut down and there has been a decline in manual industrial live in the area. The boys recognise this and as a result saw little option other than continuing their education post 16. Not all despise academic qualifications 4/12 went to uni.
The macho lads
Macho lad so school as representing hostile authority and making meaningless work demands on them seeing as academic fun and we’re treated as such by their teachers their concerns were acting tough having a laugh looking after their mites and looking smart so unsuitable for real men.
