Q

Describe the various soil profiles within St-Emillon

A

Three key profiles:

To the northwest of the appellation soft sand on top with gravel underneath. Allows for more Cabernet Franc/Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend - see Cheval Blanc

In the heart of the appellation there is a plateaux of rich clay on top of a limestone bedrock. Towards the edge of this plateaux the clay-soils are thicker than the bedrock.

To the south of the limestone plateaux the soil is dominated by sand and gravel washed from the Dordogne River. Not suitable for quality viticulture.

Q

What are the dominate soils throughout Fronsac AOP and Canon-Fronsac AOP?

A

Towards the Dordogne there is a sandy loan that is not suitable for quality viticulture. Away from the river there is a mix of limestone and clay. The upper reaches of the valleys created by subsidiaries off the Isle River are rich in limestone. Clay tends to dominate in the flatter areas of the region.

Q

Describe the soil profiles throughout Pomerol

A

Three ‘ridges’: the first ridge is towards the south around the town of Libourne and the river Dordogne mostly made up of sand. As you move up the gentle slope into the second ridge some gravel is introduced which adds heat to a mix that also includes clay, making it more suitable to viticulture. The final ridge sits at the heart of the appellation: the famous blue clay of Petrus with some gravel in the mix as well.
