what did each party in the Triple Intervention want?
Russia - warm water ports.
Germany - wanted Russian attention off their western border.
France - obligated through the 1894 Franco-Russian agreement.
why did Japan give Liaodong peninsula over, even though they had only just won it?
Challenged by 3 of the eminent world powers.
They were able to increase the war indemnity to China by £30 million.
what was China’s response to the Triple Intervention?
not grateful - showed their weaknesses as they were controlled by foreigners once again.

the murder of 2 German missionaries in an anti-western rebellion allowed them to take control of the whole province.
what did Russia do in 1897?
they entered Lushun and signed a 25 year “protection” lease and got permission to start building the South Manchuria railway
what was Lushun renamed by the foreigners?
Port Arthur
what kind of interest did Britain have in China?
economic - not territorial. They didn’t want to overextend and destabilise their empire. However, any annexations to other colonial powers jeopardised British trade so they still wanted influence.
what 3 things did Britain get in the Scramble for Concessions?
- Weihaiwei port
- Rail and trading rights in the Yangtze Valley
- Extended Hong Kong - New Territories

they got the port for as long as Port Arthur was Russian (25 years).

expanded on Hong Kong (1842 and 1860) over tenfold going inland.
99 year lease.
Provided fertile farmland, Hong Kong industrial base and housing.
