Book of the Month - Interview questions Flashcards
Tell us 3 values you work by
Collaboration
Done a lot of projects in the past that were made better by combining ideas and perspectives
Curiosity
I’ve found that it’s important for learning and developing new skills and getting to know a new environment
Quality
Satisfying to create a good end product or being able to learn from it - one of my biggest motivators in work
What’s your style of work?
Organized
I find that breaking down tasks and scheduling them out helps me operate most successfully
Communicative
In team situations, I try to encourage everyone to share their perspectives and create an open dialogue
I tend to ask clarifying questions and ask for feedback to make sure that everyone is on the same page (found that that helps team productivity)
Do you value career-growth or work-life balance?
I think in any job you need some aspects of both, but at this stage in my life and career I’m more concerned with career growth since I have the time to dedicate to that, and I know professional growth is super important in the early career stages as well so it’s more of a priority
What are you trying to prove to yourself with this job?
I’m looking for an opportunity for experience/hands on learning, and improving skills
Prove that I have the ability to problem-solve and adapt
Handle a variety of workloads and tasks
personal/professional growth is what I’m after
How important is work/life balance?
It’s somewhat important, I think you need a mix of both
But I’m definitely willing to lean more towards the work side for the right role if necessary
What are your long term career goals/where do you see yourself in five years
I think that depends on what my first entry level role is (what area of marketing)
I would hope by that point I’ve built a strong foundation and found more of a niche in my field
At that point I hope I would have had a lot of practice working in teams and on a variety of projects, maybe taking on more leadership type roles/higher level tasks
Still be in an environment that prioritizes career and learning growth, seeking new opportunities
Why BOTM?
As someone who’s passionate about books, a company involved promoting reading and uncovering new authors interested me
But also professionally, e-commerce is an area that I’m really looking to explore
Being able to combine those things was exciting to me, and I don’t think you see an opportunity like that often
From what I had researched, it seemed like a really supportive working environment where people were invested in helping each other succeed, which really resonated with me
Tell me about yourself
I graduated in March from the U of WA, business major, marketing and information systems
I can give you an overview of my general experience so far
When I was in school:
I was on the exec team for my school’s undergrad women in business club
Was also part of a student consulting group
I’ve also done one a few internships -
One at an eyewear company (Marchon)
One last summer at Revlon (the makeup brand)
marketing and brand management focused
Since I’ve graduated, I’ve been searching for full-time roles
Which is what led me here
Strengths
Curiosity and willingness to learn
I’ve found that this has been useful, especially in past internship experiences
I think being curious and asking questions helped me fully understand the business environment
It allowed me to learn new tools and grow my skills
Goal-driven
This really helped me as I was moving through college
I was always motivated to seek out opportunities to grow/advance, for example, regarding leadership positions in school organizations or finding internships
I tried to push myself to seek out new experiences and get out of my comfort zone
Collaboration
I really enjoy getting to work in a team and being able to create a strong group environment
In team/group project settings in the past, I tried to encourage everyone to share their perspectives and bounce ideas off each other
As well as figuring out how we could divide up tasks to leverage everyone’s strengths to work better as a group
Why would you be a good fit (for the company)
From what I’ve gathered so far, the company values continuous learning, adaptability which is something that I’m committed to as well and looking for in a role
The work environment seems very collaborative and supportive, and people seemed dedicated to helping each other succeed: I enjoy working in a team environment, and would be eager to contribute to that kind of culture
What are your career goals/what are you looking for?
I think right now, I’m looking for a solid learning environment
I’d love to be able to work on a variety of projects
Get exposure to different areas of marketing
I’d love to develop data and quantitative/digital marketing skills more
Kind of got a taste of that with past internships, but would love to explore that more
utilize non-technical/soft skills (project management, problem solving and communication)
Weaknesses
Sometimes when I’m working on a project or a task, I can get too absorbed or consumed by it
This isn’t great, because I’ve realized I can think better and make better decisions when I have a clear head
To fix this, I’ve been trying to work on setting the task down and working on something else for a while to give myself some breathing room from it, and then coming back later with a different perspective
Summary of past internships
Past internships were mainly brand management focused
Revlon, last summer
It was a lot of trend and market analysis

Worked on brand briefs which summarized trends, competitors, top sales (pricing, colors, customer info) for each brand
