At the council of gods what is Athene concerned about?
Odysseus as Calypso is keeping him captive and not letting him go. Also Telemachus his sons because Penelope’s suitors are plotting to kill him.
What is Zeus’ decision?
He will let Odysseus get home by building a raft. Once he reaches the land of Scherie, the rich country of the Phaeacians, they will help him home in a ship.
In the council of gods what does Hermes do?
Puts on his gold sandals and picks up his wand which he uses to send people to sleep or to wake them.
What is Hermes compared to?
A seagull.
When Hermes arrives what is Odysseus doing?
He is on the shore thinking and crying.
When Odysseus is on the shore how is he described?
Disconsolate.
When Calypso see Hermes how does she break the laws of xenia?
She asks him what brings him here.
However how does she correct herself and offer xenia?
She invites him inside and offers her hospitality, with a cup of nectar and Ambrosia.
How does Calypso reply to Hermes announcement?
She shudders because she rescued Odysseus from death and so believes that she should be able to do what she wants with him.
Why is she annoyed at Zeus?
He is the one who put Odysseus in this position as he struck his ship. She is also annoyed as male gods can sleep with mortals but she cannot.
How has Calypso helped Odysseus?
She rescued him, welcoming him with open arms and tendered him.
Why does she agree to let Zeus go?
Because he has ordered it.
How did she say she would help Odysseus?
She would give him direction and bring him safe and sound home.
What did she offer Odysseus?
To become ageless.
When we first meet Odysseus he is crying, why?
He misses his family and home.
Why is it surprising that he is crying?
He is brave, strong and a fierce warrior.
What does Calypso tell Odysseus?
To fell some trees and to build a raft.
Why is Odysseus worried at this request?
He thinks Calypso is tricking him because the kind of boat she is suggesting could never make the journey.
What did Calypso swear by to prove she wasn’t lying?
The Earth, the sky and the Styx.
