Bony landmarks Flashcards
What is a condyle?
A large, rounded, articulating knob.
Example: condyles of the humerus.
What is a facet?
A flattened or shallow articulating surface.
Example: costal facet of the femur.
What is a head in bony landmarks?
A prominent, rounded, articulating end of a bone.
Example: head of femur.
What is a crest?
A narrow, ridgeline projection.
Example: iliac crest of the pelvis.
What is an epicondyle?
A projection above a condyle.
Example: medial epicondyle of the femur.
What is a process?
Any prominent bony structure.
Example: mastoid process of the temporal bone.
What is a spine in bony landmarks?
A sharp, slender process.
Example: Spine of the Scapula.
What is a trochanter?
A massive process found only on the femur.
Example: greater/ lesser trochanter.
What is a tubercle?
A small, rounded process.
Example: greater tubercle of the humerus.
What is a tuberosity?
A large, roughened process.
Example: radial tuberosity of the radius.
What is an alveolus?
A deep pit or socket.
Example: Alveoli for the teeth.
What is a foramen?
A rounded opening through a bone.
What is a fovea?
A small pit or depression.
Example: Fovea capitis of the femur.
