Anatomical movements / planes / axes Flashcards
What is inversion?
Inversion is a result of standing on the outer edge of ur foot.
Ankle joint only
Twisting ur ankle
What is eversion?
Eversion is the result of standing on the inner edge of your foot.
Ankle joint only
What is external rotation?
External rotation is when you turn or twist a body part outward.
What is internal rotation?
Internal rotation is when you turn or twist a body part inward towards the middle.
What is elevation?
Elevation is moving in an upward direction, such as with the shoulders.
What is depression?
Depression is movement in a downward direction.
What is circumduction?
Circumduction is a windmill action, a combination movement.
Example: underhand pitch in softball
What is the frontal plane?
The frontal plane is vertical and extends from one side of the body to another (coronal).
An example of movement in the frontal plane is when an athlete performs a jumping jack.
- The arms move outward and upward to the sides of the body, and the legs also move sideways, all occurring in the frontal plane, which divides the body into front and back halves.
What is the transverse plane?
The transverse plane is horizontal and divides the upper and lower body into segments.
An example of movement in the transverse plane is when a person performs a rotational movement like throwing a baseball.
- As the body rotates around the vertical axis, the torso and shoulders rotate, while the hips remain relatively stable. This movement occurs in the transverse plane, which divides the body into upper and lower halves.
What is the sagittal plane?
The sagittal plane is vertical and extends from the front to the back of the body.
Example: A somersault moves in the Sagittal plane and horixontal axis
What is the horizontal axis?
The horizontal axis extends from one side to the other side of the body (left to right).
Example: Somersault
What is the longitudinal axis?
The longitudinal axis, known as the polar axis, is vertical and runs from head to toe.
Example: doing a spin on ice
What is the antero-posterior axis?
The antero-posterior axis extends from the front of the body to the back.
A pole going through the front side to the back side of ur body
Example: is cartwheel is in the antero-posterior axis and in the frontal plane
Protraction
Moving in a forward (anterior) direction
Example: Sticking ur chin out
Retraction
Moving in a backward (posterior) direction
Example: Pushing shoulders back to squeeze shoulder blades together
