what are some functions of bones?

A
  • shape and strength for the body
  • support and protection for vital organs
  • storage of phosphorus, calcium, magnesium and sodium
  • production of red and white blood cells
  • produce movement through skeletal muscle attachment
  • acid/base balance: bone tissue buffers the blood against excessive pH changes by absorbing or releasing alkaline salts
  • maintains muscles in position

what is cartilage?

A

dense connective tissue abundant in collagen and elastin fibers

  • flexible
  • cushions bones and joints, prevents fractures
  • different from bones in that cartilage can’t repair itself
