Bone Growth Flashcards
What is the process of transforming cartilage to bone?
Endochondral ossification
How long do bones begin as a cartilage model?
6 weeks after fertilisation.
What the is the process of the endochondral ossification?
At some point the very centres of the cartilage models to calcification.
That process intensifies. Blood vessels start coming to surface of that cartilage model. It is important because osteoblasts are going to the surface to form bones.
After a while the blood vessels start to become internal to the cartilage model. Taking the osteoblasts with them and causing the centre of that bone to form a calcified matrix.
It remodels and remodels..
Causing normal osteoblastic and osteoclastic activity happening inside the cartilage model that creates bone in the shape of a diaphysis.
Because this is the first bit to ossification, we call this the primary ossification centre.
What is the primary centres of ossification
Develop at different times depending on the bone.
A primary ossification centre is the first area of a bone to start ossifying.
What is the secondary ossification centres?
A secondary ossification centre is the area of ossification that appears after the primary ossification centre has already appeared
How do bones grow?
Enabled by epiphyseal plates. (growth plates).
What is a joint?
Holds bone together, involves bone shapes and soft tissue and allows free or control movement.
Soft tissues associated with joints?
Different compositions depending on function. Have no inorganic component.
