Bone Flashcards
What are the two types of bones?
Compact and Spongy
What is compact bone?
Forms dense, hard outer casing of all bones
composed of osteons
function: resist forces from weight and movement
What is spongy bone?
Forms light, the thin inner network of bone
Function: can resist stress on bones in multiple directions
found within flat and the epiphysis of long bones
Functions of bone?
Support
Protections
body movement
mineral storage
Hematopoiesis
What is hematopoiesis?
production of blood cells
occurs in red bone marrow
What is diaphysis?
Cylindrical shaft, compact bone with medullary cavity
What is the medullary cavity?
Hollow inside of diaphysis
lined with endosteum
yellow marrow in adults
What is the epiphysis?
the ends of the bone
outside layer of compact bone surrounding spongy bone
proximal and distal
What is articular cartilage?
hyaline cartilage on the epiphysis
What is the periosteum?
Dense irregular CT that covers the outside of bone
function: growth in bone width
very vascular and lots of nerves
What is concentric lamellae?
concentric rings of bone matrix surrounding the central canal
What is interstitial lamellae?
Incomplete remnants of osteons
What is circumferential lamellae?
Rings of bone that run the entire circumference of the shaft
What is intramembranous ossification?
Pre-existing tissue is mesenchyme.
What is endochondral ossification?
Pre-existing tissue is hyaline cartilage
