Bonding Flashcards
Whats the melting and boiling point like in ionic compounds?
High melting point due to strong electrostatic forces
Whats the melting and boiling point like in covalent compounds?
Low as simple molecular compound are held together by week van der waals forces but strong covalent bonds
Giant covalent compounds - high due to strong covalent bonds
Whats the melting and boiling point like in metallic compounds?
High due to strong metallic bonds throughout the lattice
Whats the conductivity like in metallic compounds
Good due to mobile electron cloud
Whats the conductivity like in covalent compounds
Not good as there are no mobile electrons
Whats the conductivity like in ionic compounds?
Not in solid but yes in molten
Are ionic structures soluble?
Yes in polar solvents as water attracts ions in lattice
Are covalent structures soluble?
Simple soluble in non polar solvents but insoluble in water
Are metallic structures soluble?
Insoluble in polar and non polar
Why is K weaker than Na?
K is larger so cloud has more volume to cover so is less effective
Why is Mg stronger than K?
More electrons donated to the cloud, greater electron density
Why does electronegativity increase across a period?
Nuclear charge increases and so does the attraction for covalent bonds
Why does electronegativity decrease down a group?
Less shielding from nucleus and less shielding
