Anatomical Position
Standing upright, head and eyes directed straight ahead, upper limbs at sides, palms facing forward
Upward facing position
Supine
Downward facing position
Prone
Anterior & Posterior
anterior is the front, posterior is the back. E.g. back of hand is posterior, anterior is the palm
Superior & Inferior (cranial & caudal)
superior is closer to head/higher than another body part, inferior is closer to the feet/lower than another body part
Medial & Lateral
Medial is towards the midline (equal left and right sections) of the body, lateral is toward the side of the body
Parietal & Visceral (organs)
parietal forms the outer wall of the body cavity, visceral is the inner wall of an organ
Peripheral & Central
peripheral: away from the centre, central: towards the centre
Proximal & Distal
Proximal: toward the beginning of a structure, Distal: away from the beginning of a structure
Deep, superficial & median
Deep: further away from the surface of the organ, Superficial: near the surface of the organism, Median: middle of a structure
Sagittal & Median
Two half split into left and right
Frontal/coronal
longitudinal into front/back sides
Transverse
split in the middle
