Atoms/Molecules & Chemistry of water Flashcards
What chemical elements make up most matter.
Oxygen, Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen
Atom
smallest unit of an element
Atomic number
= protons/electrons
Mass number
= protons + neutrons
Molecule
two or more atoms linked by chemical bonds
compound
two or more elements in a fixed ratio
Ionic bonds
two atoms of opposite charges
Covalent bonds
Polar covalent: unequal sharing
Non-polar: atoms share electrons equally
Inorganic vs organic
organic alway contain carbon, atoms held by covalent bonds, complex structures.
inorganic dont always contain carbon, held by ionic or covalent bonds, simpler structure
Chemical composition of water
Oxygen and hydrogen, oxygen is more electronegative than hydrogen so oxygen pulls hydrogen to share its electrons
