Abduction
Arm moved away from side of body to outstretched position
Adduction
Moving leg toward midpoint of body
Circumduction
Turning in circular motion, circling the arm at the shoulder
Flexion
State of being bent, bringing forearm by bending the elbow
Extension
State of being in a straight line, straightening the elbow by extending forearm
Hyperextension
State of exaggerated extension, greater than 180 degrees, arching back and looking up at the ceiling
Dorsiflexion
Backward bending of hand or foot, toes are brought up as though to point them at the knee
Plantar Flexion
Flexion of the foot, pointing toes down
Rotation
Turning on an axis, turning of body part on axis provided by its joint, thumb moved in circle
Internal Rotation
Body part turning on its axis toward midline of body, leg turns inward at hip & toes point toward midline of body
External Rotation
Body part turning on its axis away from midline of body, leg turns outward at hip & toes point away from midline of body
Pronation
Assumption of prone position (lying on abdomen, face down), forearm turned so that palm faces downward
Supination
Assumption of supine position (lying on back, face up), forearm turned so that palm faces up
Inversion
Turning ankle so feet turn inward
Eversion
Turning ankle so feet turn outward
