Social Comparison and Body Dissatisfaction
Dittmar & Howard studied Body Dissatisfaction as a result of media exposure.
They found two mediators:
- the higher the exent women’s internalization of the thin ideal, the higher body dissatisfaction
- Social comparison: the higher, the higher dissatisfaction
Social Comparison and Eating:
What is the reaction of media exposure to thin models in restraint vs. unrestraint eaters
Unrestraint: no effect
Restraint: ate more when exposed to slim model

- Restriction of Energy Intake Leading to a Significantly Low Body Weight
- Intense fear of becoming fat
- Disturbance in body perception

- Binge Eating
- lack of control over eating
- large amount in discrete amound
- Compensatory Behaviour
- Self-evaluation influenced by weight/shape
Frequency: Binge Eating / compensatory behaviour at least 1/ week over a period of three month
