BODY FLUIDS FROM NORMALLY STERILE SITES Flashcards
Sterile fluids in several cavities of the body are
necessary for protection and normal function of the
organs they surround
During disease or infection, these fluids can
accumulate and become harmful
Collection of these fluids for analysis requires
an aseptic surgical needle puncture into a membrane
or cavity where fluid is then aspirated and placed into sterile collection containers.
The following
are sources of normally sterile fluids able to be collected for analysis
> Serous fluids: Pericardial fluid
Pleural fluid, Peritoneal fluid, or ascites
Synovial fluids
Vitreous liquid
Amniotic fluid
Serous fluids surround
the pericardial, pleural, and peritoneal cavities
Pericardial fluid exists
in the space surrounding the heart.
Pleural fluid is present
around the lungs in the thoracic cavity.
Peritoneal fluid, or ascites, resides in
the abdominal and pelvic cavities.
Synovial fluids surround and lubricate the
joints in the body
Vitreous liquid fills
the space between the lens and retina of the eye, whereas the aqueous
humor fills the anterior and posterior chambers of the eye
Amniotic fluid surrounds
the fetus in the uterus during pregnancy.
