BLS Flashcards
What are the post covid changes to BLS?
- I need full mask, visor, vest, gloves etc
- Patient needs face covering
- Altered part A and B (avoid nearing airway)
- Person briefing AED needs ppe
- filter attached to valve mask to reduce water droplets
In BLS what is DRS ABC (pre/post covid)
D - danger, check surroundings
R - response, shake shoulders and shout in each ear
S - shout, for help and AED
A - airway (pre), triple manoeuvre
B - breathing (PRE/post), look, LISTEN & feel
C - circulation, carotid pulse check
What are the 2 techniques use for opening the airway in BLS
- Head tilt - two fingers under HARD tissue of chin and palm on forehead to lean head back
- Jaw thrust - four fingers behind each angle of the mandible to tilt head back
What is it called in BLS when someone appears to be breathing but actually isn’t?
Agonal breathing - brain stem reflex when lack of oxygen
What to do in BLS if patient appears dead
- Tell someone to call 911 with instructions while you start CPR
- Tell someone to get AER and use
- Also comes with oxygen container and bag valve mask to use
- Use OAP to use if needed
In BLS what do you tell someone to say to 911 when your patient is in cardiac arrest?
- Cardiac arrest
- Not breathing
- Location
- Contact number
- Tell person on phone to go get emergency equipment (AED)
Describe CPR process
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation
- one hand flat on chest (lower 2/3 of sternum) with other interlocking fingers from above
- kneel above with arms straight and using body weight to push down (5-6 cm)
- 30 compressions too 2 breaths and repeat (100-120 compressions per min)
Process for using oxygen and bag valve mask for BLS
- plug into O2 container until bag full
- press seal tight around nose and mouth
- only squeeze a tiny bit as lungs fill quick and don’t want to fill stomach making patient sick and choking
How do you use a OAP in BLS
Oesophageal airway junction
- insert at 180 degree towards hard pallet then twist down throat
- make sure is right size by holding from mouth until junction of the mandible
What do you do if you resuscitate a patient from CPR
- Reassess stages B & C
- Reassure patient even if unconscious
- Maintain airway
- Deliver O2 via BVM
- DONT remove AED pads
- cover up to keep warm and maintain dignity
- prepare to do CPR again if re-arrest
