Blood Vessels Flashcards
Structure of arteries
Thick smooth muscle layer Elastic tissue layer Thick wall Smooth endothelium Narrow lumen
Purpose of thick muscle layer
Control/ maintenance of high blood pressure
Purpose of elastic tissue layer
Able to strech during ventricluar systole and recoil diastole
Reduces pressure surges in blood
Purpose of a thick wall
Withstand high pressure
Purpose of a narrow lumen
Maintain high blood pressure
Function of arterioles
Arteries- smaller vessels
With the job of directing blood and controling the vollume of blood into the capillaries
Structure of arterioles
Thicker smooth muscle layer- vaso contriction/ dislation
Thinner elastic layer (less pressure surges)
Structure of veins
Wider lumen- carry blood at lower pressure
Very little elastic/ musclular tissue
Values- to prevent back flow
What blood vessel vists the heart?
Veins
Structure of capillaries
Wall one cell thick- short diff path
Narrow lumen- slow max time difussion, bood cells pressed agsaint walls- short diff path
Large network- SA
Pores in walls- white blood cells big
Role of capillaries
Exchange of substances gasess nutrients glucose ect between blood tissue fluid and cells
Job of tissue fluid
Provide respiring cells with water ox glucose amino
Enables waste products CO2 lactic acid urea to move back into blood to then be removed out of body @ kidneys
