Blood Pressure Flashcards
How does the nervous system regulate blood pressure?
The brain sends signals to blood vessels to relax when the blood pressure is too high and to contract when the blood pressure is too low.
Blood pressure
Heart contracts and a strong force from the blood pushes against the muscular walls of the arteries
When is the blood pressure not as strong?
When the ventricles are relaxed
Sphygmomanometer
Device that measures blood pressure
Process of sphygmomanometer-first step
Cuff is wrapped around the upper arm and air is pumped in until the blood flow through the artery is cut off
First noise of blood pressure
Systolic pressure
Second noise of blood pressure
Diastolic pressure
Systolic pressure
force felt in arteries when the ventricles contract
Diastolic pressure
force of blood in arteries when the ventricles relax (the noises stop)
Process of sphygmomanometer-second step
the pressure is released and pulse is listened to for noises
Average adult blood pressure
120/80
