blood in defending the body against disease Flashcards
How does blood help defend the body against disease
Blood contains white blood cells and platelets that protect the body by fighting infections and healing wounds.
What is the clotting mechanism?
It’s the process where platelets and proteins in plasma form a clot to seal a wound and prevent blood loss or entry of germs.
How do platelets help in clotting
Platelets gather at the site of a cut, stick together, and release chemicals that start the clotting process, forming a scab
What are phagocytes
A type of white blood cell that protects the body by engulfing and digesting bacteria and other harmful microbes.
How do phagocytes defend the body?
They move to infection sites, surround invaders like bacteria, and digest them — a process called phagocytosis
What is natural immunity?
It’s the body’s ability to resist certain diseases by using white blood cells and memory from past infections
How does natural immunity work?
After an infection, the body remembers the germ and can fight it off faster if it comes back.
