blood and their function Flashcards
What are the main components of blood
Red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and plasma.
What is the function of red blood cells (RBCs)
To carry oxygen from the lungs to the body and carbon dioxide back to the lungs.
How is the structure of red blood cells related to their function?
Biconcave shape increases surface area for oxygen exchange.
No nucleus to make more room for haemoglobin (oxygen-carrying protein).
Flexible to fit through tiny capillaries.
What is the function of white blood cells (WBCs)
To defend the body against infections and diseases
How is the structure of white blood cells related to their function
Have a nucleus to control immune responses.
Can change shape to move through blood vessel walls and reach infections.
Some produce antibodies; others engulf and destroy germs.
What is the function of platelets
To help blood clot and stop bleeding at wounds.
How is the structure of platelets related to their function
Small and disc-shaped to quickly stick to damaged areas.
Release chemicals that help form a clot
What is the function of plasma?
To transport substances like nutrients, hormones, carbon dioxide, and waste in the blood.
How is the structure of plasma related to its function
Liquid part of blood; mostly water to dissolve and carry many substances easily
