Blood: Definitions - Leukocytes 12.3 Flashcards
Agranuloctye
WBCs that lack specific granules.
Basophil
A type of white blood cell that has granules of heparin. Multi-lobed nucleus stains dark blue-black.
Eosinophil
A type of granulocyte. Has an orangish-pink multi-lobed nucleus.
Granules in WBCs
Contain defense chemicals .
Granulocyte
Contain specific granules in their cytoplasm.
Histamine
Chemical released by some white blood cells. Widens the “pores” and dilates local blood vessels (vasodilation).
Leukocyte
Commonly called white blood cell. Protects us from infectious microorganisms and pathogens.
Leukemia
Cancer of either the granulocytes or the agranulocytes.
Lymphocyte
A type of agranulocyte. Contains a dark blue rounded nucleus.
Lysosome
An organelle that contains digestive enzymes that destroy pathogens and cell debris.
Macrophage
A monocyte found in the tissues.
Monocyte
The largest of the wbc. A type of agranulocyte.
Neutrophil
A type of granulocyte. Fights bacteria. Multi-lobed nucleus stains purple.
Parasite
A microorganism that competes with the human for nutrients.
Pathogens
Microorganisms, such as bacteria and viruses, that cause disease.
