Whole blood indications
• Active bleeding (>25 mL blood loss)
• Hemorrhagic shock
• Exchange transfusion
• Both oxygen-carrying capacity and volume expansion are required
Packed RBC indications
• Restore oxygen carrying capacity
Leukoreduced “Leukopoor” RBC
• Anemia with history of febrile reactions
• To decrease alloimmunization to WBC or HLA antigens or Cytomegalovirus (CMV) transmission
Rejuvinated rbc indications
• Regenerate ATP and 2,3-DPG
(both vital in RBC viability)
Washed RBC indications
• Anemia with history of febrile reactions
• Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria (PNH)
• Plasma protein antibodies to reduced allergic reactions (for IgA-deficient patitens)
Frozen RBC indications
• Anemia
• Long term storage of rare and/or autologous units
Random Donor Platelets
• Thrombocytopenia
• Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC)
• Platelet Disorders
• Bleeding
