Blood And Blood Vessels Flashcards
What are the four blood cells?
Plasma
Red blood cells
White blood cells
Platelets
Which blood vessel has the highest percentage in the body? What?
Plasma (55%)
Which blood vessels have no nucleus?
Red blood cells and platelets.
Describe platelets.
They are fragments of cells that have no nucleus and help form blood clots, seal wounds and prevent blood loss (a series of enzyme controlled reactions, where fibrinogen is converted to fibrin). And all these reactions are controlled by enzymes.
What are the purposes of the white blood cells? What are the different cells of the immune system (white blood cells) and what is their function and how do each of them protect the body?
They help protect the body against disease by “fighting” pathogens (disease -causing microorganismes).
Phagocytes, that engulf foreign pathogens
Lymphocytes, which produce specific antibodies which ‘latch’ onto and kill pathogens.
