B 16 Flashcards
What is a biosphere ?
The entire surface area of the Earth.
Define biome
It is a section of the biosphere
What is an ecosystem ?
The interaction of a community of living organisms (biotic) and abiotic parts of their environment.
A community is what ?
All the different species that live in the same habitat at the same time.
What is a population ? (Scientifically speaking)
All of the organisms of one species living together in the same habitat at the same time.
What is an individual ?
J
What is interdependence ?
The dependence of every form of life on other living things and on the natural resources in its environment, such as air, soil and water.
Name three adaptations of a camel
Slit nostrils/ to protect against the sand
Very little water is lost through urination and sweating
Wide, flat feet to walk on the sand easily
Cutthroat trout are present in lakes in Yellowstone National Park.
In the last few decades, lake trout have been introduced to the lakes.
However, lake trout have emerged as predators of the cutthroat trout.
Explain how the introduction of the lake trout might cause the population sizes of both species of fish to fluctuate over time.
At first the population size of the cutthroat trout would decrease, as the lake trout would eat the cutthroat trout. This would lead to a decline in the population size of the lake trout (less to eat), allowing an increase in the population of the cutthroat trout. The population size of the lake trout would then increase (as they’d have more to eat) and the cycle would start again.
