Blood Flashcards
In what direction do arteries carry the blood?
Away from the heart
In what direction do veins carry the blood?
Back to the heart
What type of blood do arteries carry?
Oxygenated blood
What kind of blood do veins carry?
Deoxygenated blood
What is plasma?
A pale yellow liquid which carries everything
What are the 2 type of white blood cells?
Engulfing white cells and antibody producing white cells
What is the function of the engulfing white cell?
To destroy bacteria
What is the function of a antibody producing cell?
They send out chemicals to make microbes stick together so white engulfing cells can kill them
Why do arteries have a thick layer of smooth and elastic fibres and a narrow lumen (where blood travels)?
They are under high pressure due to the pumping action of the heart
Why is the layer of smooth and elastic fibres in the veins less thick?
The blood is at a lower pressure
Why do veins have a wider lumen?
To help blood flow
What do veins have that arteries don’t?
Valves to keep the blood flowing in the right direction
What is the function of the capillaries?
They deliver food and oxygen to all body cells and take waste products away
Why are capillaries one cell thick?
To make it easy for substances to pass in and out through them
Where does the right side of your heart pump blood to?
Pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs
