Block 8 - Aircraft Handling Fundamentals Flashcards
What is SE used for in aircraft handling?
SE- Support Equipment
Used to: - Service
- Test - Troubleshoot aircraft systems
List the danger areas for aviation?
- Intakes
- Exhausts
- Flight Controls
- Compressed gases
- Cryogenics
- Explosives
- HAZMAT
State the procedure for grounding an aircraft
- Hook up grounding strap to certified static ground
2. Hook to aircraft grounding receptacle
Why is it necessary to static ground the windshield?
You must ground the windshield because a static charge of 100,000 volts may have built up during flight
What is the danger speed and number of chains required for an Initial tie-down?
45 knots
6 chains
Usually done immediately prior to, in between, or immediately after flight
What is the danger speed and number of chains required for a Normal Weather tie-down?
45 knots
9 chains
What is the danger speed and number of chains required for a Moderate Weather tie-down
46-60 knots
14 chains
What is the danger speed and number of chains required for a Heavy Weather tie-down
> 60 knots
20 chains
Towing speed shall not exceed?
- 5mph
- Speed of the slowest walker
How many personnel does it take to move an aircraft?
6-10 personnel
Who are the personnel required to move an aircraft?
- Move Director
- Brake Rider
- Chock Walker
- Safety Observers
- Tractor Driver
What does the Move Director do?
Overall responsible for assembling the move crew
What does the Brake Rider do?
Conducts a pre-move inspection of brake system and aircraft to ensure it is mechanically sound and ready for movement
What does the Chock Walker do?
Responsible for removing, carrying and installing the wheel chocks
What do the Safety Observers do?
Primarily responsible for ensuring that the aircraft is ready to be towed and that there is ample clearance for the aircraft
What does the Tractor Driver do?
Responsible for the safe and slow movement of the aircraft from hook up to the final parking spot
State the purpose of the emergency shore based recovery equipment
Used to minimize the chance of an accident that could cause injury to the pilot and crew or damage to the aircraft
What is a Wind Indicator?
Provides a method for prompt issuance of wind directions and velocities to pilots
What is an Airfield Rotating Beacon?
Used to identify the airport’s location during darkness and daylight hours
Flash rate is 12-15 flashes per minute
What are Tower visual communications?
A coordination device between the radar controller and the control tower
What is the TACAN system?
TACtical Air Navigation
Determines aircraft and position from a TACAN station. i.e. ships, air stations
Primary navigation air used by carrier based aircraft
What is ILS? (Instrument Landing System)
Provides an approach path for exact alignment and descent of an aircraft on final approach to a runway
What is VOR? (VHF Omnidirectional Range)
It eliminates many of the difficulties previously encountered in air navigation.
Operates between freqs. 108 - 117.95 MHz
What is GPS?
Designed to provide highly accurate 3-D position, velocity and time data to the aircraft.
Uses Satellite Vehicle (SV) consists of 24 operational satellites in 6 circular orbits (10,900 nmi) above the earth
