Block 7 - Airfield and Flight Deck Familiarization Flashcards
Explain the Safety Guidelines for the airfield/flight line and the flight deck.
Jet blast, rotor arcs, propellers and jet intakes are potentially life threatening while being FOD free, wearing your PPE, being fully qualified, and being aware.
What safety PPE is required on the flight line?

Discuss Runways
Paved areas that are used for aircraft takeoff and landing
Discuss Threshold Markings
Parallel stripes on the ends of the runways.
Stripes are 12 feet wide by 150 feet long
Designates landing area
Discuss Overrun Area
Paved or un-paved section on the ends of the runways that provide a deceleration area for aborting or overshooting aircraft

Designed to stop tricycle landing gear equipped aircraft not equipped with tailhooks
Always in standby status
Discuss Emergency Shore Based Recovery Equipment
Used for in-flight emergencies that requires stopping the aircraft in the shortest distance possible

Paved areas for aircraft to move between parking aprons, runways, and airfield services
Discuss Parking Apron
Open paved areas adjacent to hangers, fuel, services often called the flight line.
Discuss Compass Rose

Discuss Runway Numbering System
Normally numbered in relation to their magnetic heading rounded off to the nearest 10 degrees, i.e., a runway heading of 250 degree is runway 25
Discuss Airfield Rotating Beacon
Used to identify the airport’s location
Military airfields use 2 white lights and 1 green flashing 12 to 15 times per minute
