What does CATCC stand for?
Carrier Air Traffic Control Center
What is the CATCC responsible for?
They maintain the primary control of airborne aircraft operating from the carrier and is responsible for the status and upkeep of all carrier air operations.
What does FLOLS stand for?
Fresnel Lens Optical Landing System
What is the purpose of the FLOLS?
It provides the pilot with a visual indication of his/her relative position with respect to a prescribed glide slope.
What is the purpose of the glide slope?
It’s designed to bring the aircraft down to the deck, within the cross-deck pendant pattern, with a sage arresting hook clearance above the stern ramp of the carrier.
What does MOVLAS stand for?
Manually Operated Visual Landing Aid System
How does the MOVLAS function?
It’s an emergency signaling system that is intended to be used when the primary optical landing system is rendered inoperative.
What is the difference between MOVLAS and FLOLS?
They both work the same but the MOVLAS is a smaller version.
What is the purpose of the MOVLAS?
It’s a backup visual landing aid system used when the primary optical system (FLOLS) is inoperable, stabilization limits are exceeded or unreliable (primarily due to extreme sea states causing a pitching deck), and for pilot/LSO training.
How many installation modes are aboard ship?

Describe station 1.
It is immediately in front of the FLOLS and utilizes the FLOLS wave-off, datum, and cut light displays.
Describe station 2 and 3.
They are independent of the FLOLS and are located on the flight deck port and starboard side respectively.
Describe the MOVLAS.
It is nothing more than a vertical series of orange lamps manually controlled by the LSO with a hand controller to simulate the ball.
