Block 5: ALSS/EGRESS-C. Canopy/Ejection Seat Flashcards
What is the purpose of the ejection seat?
To provide aircrew a place to sit during normal conditions and for propelling occupant out during emergency situations.
What type of ejection seat is used?
SJU-17A (V) 2/A Series
What does NACES stand for?
Navy Common Ejection Seat
Explain the ejection seat?
It is automatic, cartridge operated, and rocket assisted,
How is the ejection system initiated?
By pulling the ejection control handle located on the front of the seat bucket.
How is the ejection seat system operated?
By ballistic gas pressure, produced by ejection seat initiators that fire when the ejection control handle is pulled, traveling through the system.
How many cartridges does each seat initiator contain?
Two, left and right.
What is the function of the gases from the right cartridge?
Starts the canopy jettison sequence, activates the seat electronic sequencer, activates seat restraints and fires the seat catapult after a delay inserted by the escape system.
What is the function of the gases from the left cartridge?
They redundantly activate the seat electronic sequencer and also provides a backup source to fire the seat catapult should the primary path from the right cartridge fail.
Is there an emergency oxygen system in the seat pan?
Yes
What is the size of the Emergency Oxygen cylinder?
100 cubic inches.
What are the component’s of the emergency oxygen system?
An oxygen cylinder, pressure reducer, and associated piping are mounted on the underside of the seat platform. A green manual operating handle is mounted on the left side of the platform and a cylinder contents gage is on the inside face of the left hand thigh support.
How does the emergency oxygen system operate during the ejection sequence?
It is automatically activated by a lanyard connected to the cockpit floor. An oxygen/communications hose is connected to fittings on the left rear top of the rigid platform and provides connections between the seat occupant and the aircraft and survival kit system.
What is the Canopy system?
It is a pyrotechnically operated emergency canopy removal.
What is the purpose of the canopy system?
It provides the capability to explosively jettison the canopy from the aircraft in the case of emergency.
